STATUS: Part-time, Estimated 20 hours/week
START DATE: January 10, 2022
SALARY: $30,000

ECOS: The Environmental Clearinghouse is a regional environmental education organization founded in 1972 in Schenectady, NY. Its mission is to provide environmental experiences and education for youth and adults to develop enjoyment and understanding of the natural world and to foster action to preserve it. 

ECOS sponsors outings, field trips, environmental programs and talks as well as providing hands-on environmental classes for schoolchildren. ECOS has produced publications describing natural areas in the region, as well as natural history guides for hiking, biking and cross-country skiing.  


The Executive Director is the key management leader of ECOS. The Executive Director is responsible for overseeing the administration, programs and strategic plan of the organization. Other key duties include fundraising, marketing, and community outreach. The position reports directly to the Board of Directors.


Board Governance: Work with the Board to fulfill the organization’s mission. 

  • Responsible for communicating effectively with the Board,  and providing information necessary, in a timely and accurate manner for the Board to make informed decisions. 

Financial Performance: Develop resources to ensure the financial health of the organization. 

  • Responsible for coordinating fundraising activities.
  • Responsible for working closely with the organization’s treasurer to maintain a positive financial position.

Organization Operations: Oversee operation of the organization.

  • Responsible for collaboration with the Program Committee to identify programs and recruit volunteers.
  • Responsible for increasing visibility of the organization.


  1. Lead and organize the 50th anniversary of ECOS.
  2. Engage in fundraising through corporate funding, grant writing, increasing membership and donations.
  3. Attend and report at ECOS Board meetings. 
  4. Supervise the office manager.
  5. Organize and delegate tasks to staff, the Board, and volunteers. 
  6. Submit to the Board a proposed annual budget and monthly financial statements that accurately reflect the financial condition of the organization.
  7. Serve as ECOS’ primary spokesperson to the media and general public.
  8. Other duties as assigned by the Board.

Preferred Professional Qualifications:

  • Non-profit management experience.
  • Fundraising experience.
  • Experience and skill working with a Board of Directors.
  • Ability to effectively communicate the organization’s mission to donors, volunteers, and the larger  community.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills. 
  • Ability to work with staff.
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and dedication to the mission of ECOS.
