Plant a Seed with a Child
March 20 @ 9:00 am - 2:00 pm
Last October, Program Committee members Arden Rauch and Art Clayman met with Rebekka Henriksen, a mother at Zoller Elementary School in Schenectady who has been doing a great job working with students and teachers there to “green” the school.
At the time, Rebekka had already rehabilitated a number of abandoned raised bed gardens, making some accessible to disabled students. She had also established beautiful flower gardens, which the students tend. And she had ambitious plans to do more — e.g. creating a rain garden and an orchard, setting up rain barrels, and starting a better composting system.
With spring approaching, Rebekka is now ready to follow through on those plans. She wants to know if any ECOS volunteers would be available to participate in National Plant a Seed Day at Zoller on March 20. This would involve going into classrooms and helping children plant seeds in recycled containers.
She also wants to know if any volunteers would be interested in setting up rain barrels at the school, and helping establish the rain garden and composting system.
Childhood education will be one of ECOS’ main focuses in 2019 and beyond, and this is an excellent opportunity for our members to share their knowledge and get involved.
